October Happenings

10/6/2011

It’s hard to believe its October already! We’ve got a lot happening this month at LPA, from parent-teacher conferences and report cards to bully prevention events. I’d like to make you aware of a few so that you can take the time to discuss them with your children.

This week, the Lakeside campus is taking part in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, one of the best known and most researched bullying prevention programs of its kind. Lakeside students in grades 3 – 8 will be asked to complete a bullying prevention survey on Thursday, October 6.The goal of this important program is to:

  • REDUCE any existing bullying problems
  • PREVENT new bullying problems with a proactive approach
  • ACHIEVE better peer relations at schools

You can learn more at www.olweus.org.

If you would prefer that your child NOT participate in this event, please submit this request in writing to your child’s teacher.

In addition to student education, a Lakeside bullying committee made up of seven staff members will complete a two-day training with Olweus at the end of October. These teachers will then come back to school and share with our teachers all they’ve learned.

Next week, report cards will come home on Wednesday, October 12. As you know, it’s important to discuss report cards with your children so they understand how they are doing in their classes, and how they might be able to improve and continue to progress. If you have any questions or concerns that you’d like to discuss with your child’s teacher, parent/teacher conferences will be held the week of October 17-21. This is a great time to bring up your child’s report card and discuss how your child is performing in his or her classes. It’s also a terrific opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, his or her strengths and any areas that may need improvement. Of course, you can always call or email your child’s teacher at any time during the year to schedule an appointment.

In between report cards and parent/teacher conferences comes Fall Break for both campuses, October 13 and 14. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable long weekend!

To continued health, happiness and learning.
