A Real Life Lesson of Help & Hope
La Paloma Academy students contribute to 16th Annual HopeFest 2008
Tucson, AZ (10/7/08) – Students at La Paloma Academy all share one ambition – to better our community through acts of giving and kindness. La Paloma Academy students are currently working on a project to benefit real people in our community – Tucsonans who are struggling, homeless and or in need of the necessary resources for survival. For the next several weeks, students will bring as many new toiletry/hygienic items as possible to their classrooms. La Paloma Academy will donate all collected items to Tucson’s HopeFest 2008, to be held October 25 at Tucson Electric Park.
Every K-8th grade classroom at La Paloma Academy’s two campuses, Central and Lakeside, is on a mission to bring in hygienic items, like toothpaste, toilet paper, toothbrushes, shampoo, and more. The schools are joining the hundreds of HopeFest volunteers who come together to help make an impact on those who are in desperate need of a helping hand.
Every day, La Paloma Academy students learn the value of acting as caring and involved citizens of the Tucson community. It is the school’s founding principle to develop strong family values, allowing children to become not only well-rounded scholastic students, but also lifelong responsible citizens.
Now in its 16th year of service to the community, HopeFest was created as a community outreach program to help our less fortunate Tucson families. HopeFest helps people who lack basic goods such as clothing and hygiene items, and who do not have access to dental and medical care. HopeFest provides dental care, medical screening, groceries, haircuts, clothing and hygienic items to homeless, working poor, and underprivileged families in Tucson.
Dentists and dental assistants from across the city will come together to donate their time and services, while doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses will also be lending a helping hand to HopeFest. They will check vital signs, blood pressure and glucose levels, as well as performing eye and hearing tests. These tests often help adults and children catch medical problems that might otherwise go undetected.
As a little extra incentive, each item brought in by a student earns his or her classroom a point. One K-4th and one 5th-8th grade classroom with the most points will win a pizza party.
